Why African buyers source suits from Istanbul

African importers buy from Istanbul because they get European-style cutting, a wide range of ceremony styles and short production times from one factory. Mark Morente has been producing men's suits for more than 20 years, with capacity of 1000+ suits per day, ISO 9001 certified production and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 fabrics.

Distance matters too. Istanbul is one of the busiest air cargo hubs between Europe, Asia and Africa, and Turkish Airlines flies to dozens of cities on the continent. For many buyers in Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, Kinshasa or Algiers, that means goods can leave our factory and land in their city on a scheduled flight, without changing carriers in the Gulf or Europe.

We work with businesses only. The smallest order is one lot from stock, so we are a fit for wholesalers, importers, menswear shops, boutique chains and wedding suit retailers, not for individuals buying one or two suits.

Two ways to order

You can buy from stock in lots, or produce under your own brand. Most new African customers start with stock lots and move to private label once they know which models sell.

  • Stock lots. Many catalog models are ready in stock and sold as size-run lots, for example one model in EU sizes 46-48-50-52-54-56, 6 suits per lot. Lot structure varies by model.
  • Made to order. From 100 units per style, under your label. Fabric, colour, fit, lining, buttons, labels and packaging can all be chosen. Production typically takes 12-15 days, depending on quantity, model and fabric availability.

Region by region: what buyers order and how they ship

West Africa: Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Cameroon

West African buyers order a strong share of ceremony and event wear. Wedding guests, church events and family celebrations keep demand for 3-piece suits, tuxedos and bold colours steady through the year. Wine, royal blue, emerald, cream and white sell alongside navy and charcoal. Light to mid-weight fabrics work best for the climate.

Retailers in Lagos and Accra often fly a first stock order to test the market, then move to sea freight once they know their sizes and colours. In Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Cameroon the CFA franc is pegged to the euro, so many buyers there prefer EUR invoices. In Nigeria and Ghana we usually quote in USD.

East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia

East African buyers tend to order business suits in navy, grey and charcoal, plus wedding suits for the season. Lighter fabrics are common, although the highland cities around Nairobi and Addis Ababa can take mid-weight cloth.

Air cargo to Nairobi and Addis Ababa is the usual route for smaller orders. Larger orders go by sea into Mombasa or Dar es Salaam, and Ugandan buyers often clear through Mombasa and truck inland. Quotes are normally in USD.

Southern Africa: South Africa, Angola

South African retailers ask for slim and modern fits, business suits for office wear, and wedding suits for grooms and groomsmen. Because seasons are reversed, plan winter-weight orders early so stock lands before June.

Johannesburg buyers usually ship by air for stock orders and by sea via Durban for container volumes. Angolan buyers ship to Luanda by air or sea. Both markets generally pay in USD.

Central Africa: DR Congo

Kinshasa has a strong culture of dressing well, and buyers there ask for statement pieces: double-breasted cuts, strong colours, jacquard and shiny ceremony fabrics. Air cargo into Kinshasa is the most common route for stock lots. Many buyers work through an agent or forwarder who consolidates goods in Istanbul and handles clearance at home. We can deliver to your forwarder's warehouse in Istanbul if that suits you better.

North Africa: Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya

North African buyers order classic business suits, wedding suits and tuxedos, with demand peaking before the wedding season and religious holidays. Fits are mostly classic and modern, in navy, black, grey and blue.

The Mediterranean is the main route. Sea freight and Ro-Ro lines connect Turkish ports with North African ports, and air cargo covers urgent restocks. Turkey has trade agreements with several North African countries, so the origin document on your shipment may affect your duty. Ask your customs broker which document to request before we ship.

Practical tips for African importers

A few things make the first order go smoothly. Most of them are about paperwork and planning, not about the suits.

  1. Start with a stock lot. Test sizes and colours in your market before committing to 100 units per style.
  2. Ask for a sample first. We can send a sample of the model so you can check the cut, fabric and finish.
  3. Confirm your size run. Many African markets need bigger sizes. Our big and tall suits cover larger chest and waist measurements.
  4. Agree on the shipping point. Door-to-door, or delivered to your forwarder in Istanbul. We quote shipping per destination.
  5. Talk to a customs broker early. Duties, import permits and pre-shipment inspection rules differ by country and change over time. Your broker should confirm them before we ship.
  6. Order ahead of the season. Wedding and holiday peaks fill factory schedules. Book your production slot a few weeks early.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for African buyers?

The minimum is one lot from stock, for example 6 suits of one model in a size run. For production under your own label, the minimum is 100 units per style.

How do you ship suits to Africa?

We ship by air cargo or sea freight, door-to-door or to your forwarder. Air is faster and suits stock orders. Sea is cheaper for large volumes. We quote shipping for each destination.

Can I pay in euros instead of US dollars?

Yes. We quote in USD or EUR. Buyers in CFA franc countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Cameroon often prefer EUR.

Do you sell single suits to customers in Africa?

No. We work with businesses only, and the smallest order is one lot. If you run a shop or a wedding suit business, we would be glad to quote.

How long does production take?

Production typically takes 12-15 days. It depends on quantity, model and fabric availability, and we confirm the timing with every quote.
